How to Check for GDPR Compliance in AvePoint’s Compliance Guardian

The forthcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the European Union’s new policy around data privacy, effective May 2018. It is extremely strict and failure to comply can result in significant fines and penalties. These fines can range up to €10 million, or 2% – on the lower end – and up to €20 million, or 4% of the worldwide annual revenue or the prior financial year.

To ensure compliance for the GDPR, we start off in Compliance Guardian, where AvePoint has built in preset checks to scan both your SharePoint and file system for Personally Identifiable Information such as phone numbers, date of birth, cities, etc.

We have also developed a test suite to scan your environment for any personal information and/or sensitive information. Upon clicking into one of these test suites, you will find a list of the specific checks that are pre-built into each collection, which you are able to use for templates if a custom check is desired.

Once this test is run across your SharePoint and file system, your non-compliant documents will be found, and you can then take managerial action to make sure that you are in compliance with the GDPR.

While we have seen that this is one of the more popular utilizations, there are endless ways to customize Compliance Guardian to a company’s goal and needs.
