Operational Governance—as it fits in an IT governance framework—helps ensure IT applications are enabling business success. Policies help guide user behavior and mitigate risk. Within a successful policy framework, applications have defined ownership, including chains of responsibility, authority, and communication with measurement and control mechanisms in place.
While Office 365 and SharePoint offer rich features to empower users and enable business success, they also present unique challenges. For example, in Office 365 there are over 19 ways to create Groups. So, we need to figure out a way to standardize policies for ownership and control, without limiting business potential. And give users access to powerful features but keep risk in check with defined services and policies that are easily enforceable. Otherwise, you’ll risk wasting time and money with bureaucratic and informal processes, excessive fire-fighting, and information silos.
