Well, the sun has set on Microsoft Ignite 2017. As the conference wraps up and folks make their way to the closing celebration at Universal Studios, there are some serious things we need to talk about — is security and compliance. Today’s keyword is GDPR!

What is GDPR?

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) imposes new rules on organizations in the European Union (EU) and those that offer goods and services to people in the EU. It also applies to those that collect and analyze data tied to EU residents, no matter where they are located. For those thinking ‘I’m outside EU, does it matter for me?’ Yes it does! If you process, hold, store,  or manage personal data of any EU resident, you need to be compliant with GDPR, regardless of where you are or where your business is located.

Microsoft is committed to GDPR compliance across their cloud services when GDPR enforcement begins May 25, 2018. During today’s sessions, Microsoft made a few announcements on how Office 365 can achieve compliance with GDPR.

Microsoft announced a new compliance solution at Ignite to help your organization meet data protection and regulatory standards more easily when using Microsoft cloud services. Compliance Manager will enable you to manage your compliance from one place. In addition, Office 365 provides many solutions that can help you identify and manage access to personal data, as well as protect Office 365 users. Above and beyond assistance that you can obtain from Microsoft, AvePoint provides technology that will help you discover, map, classify and protect your data throughout its lifecycle.
