For 2,500 council employees working to serve the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley in England, SharePoint became a vital platform for collaboration on documents, projects, and daily operations. To ensure high availability of documentation and project data, IT administrators recognized that their existing data protection strategy was not a solid long-term solution. The third-party solution that the council had in place did not allow them to efficiently ensure continuous availability of data – specifically, they could not restore at the item level, and backups were time-consuming.
Since data recovery requests accounted for 90 percent of support calls, Knowsley Council’s IT administrators needed a more efficient solution that gave them the power to optimize backups and perform granular content recovery. After evaluating solutions available in the marketplace, Knowsley Council chose to implement DocAve Backup and Restore, part of the fully-integrated DocAve Software Platform for SharePoint infrastructure management, for fast and flexible SharePoint backup.
With DocAve, Knowsley Council was able to:
- Granularly restore SharePoint content within five minutes, 98 percent faster than a previous third-party solution
- Schedule automatic full and incremental backups to ensure high availability of critical organizational data
Beyond enhanced SharePoint data protection, Knowsley Council also plans to use DocAve to carry out a flexible, full-fidelity migration to SharePoint 2013. With DocAve Migrator, the council is prepared to complete a direct migration of 1.5 terabytes (TB) of data from SharePoint 2007 to 2013 through a staged approach, enabling flexibility and maintaining all metadata throughout the process.
