#MSIgnite Day 3 Highlights: Collaboration and #Office365Groups

Hey everyone! Marta Han from AvePoint here yet again. Day three at Microsoft Ignite was more of the same — lots to do, see, and learn. Today, teamwork and collaboration were the words on everyone’s lips throughout the conference. Microsoft 365 is a big toolset offering kinds of tools for you to efficiently get work done, Teams – it’s a inner loop where people you work with regularly on core projects. One question remains though, where do I start a conversation to initiate my teamwork?

  • Yammer – it’s an outer loop where people you connect with openly across the organization.
  • Outlook – it’s ubiquitous for targeted communications.
  • SharePoint – it’s the place where you put your files, sites, and content.
  • Groups – it’s a membership service managed through all the Microsoft 365 applications like Azure Active Directory across Outlook, SharePoint, Skype for Business, Planner, Yammer, OneNote, and Microsoft Teams that use Groups.

day 3 1

Several enhancements to Groups management were announced at Ignite today. Microsoft also shared the Groups roadmap with everybody. New features include:

  • Group naming policy – applies to all apps. Ensures group names follow your organization’s schema. You can use fixed strings or Active Directory attributes as prefixes and/or suffixes, and define custom blocked words.
  • Group Expiration policy – Now you can set expiration policies on specific groups and groups older than the specified period will expire automatically. The expired groups can be restored within 30 days. Group owners will get notified to take renewal action on the group.
  • Group soft delete and restore – Deleted groups and their respective app content are kept for a maximum of 30 days. The deleted group and its content can be restored via the Exchange admin center or PowerShell.
  • Group guest access – It enables safe teamwork outside the firewall.
