Meet John Jones, Senior Account Executive based out of our Chicago office. John joined the AvePoint team in November 2015 and manages the full sales cycle for enterprise accounts within the North Central region of the U.S. Read on to learn how he landed at AvePoint, how he organizes his day, and what keeps him busy during his free time!
How did you first learn about AvePoint? What drew you to your current position?
I was approached on LinkedIn about a Senior Account Executive role at AvePoint. During the interview process, I learned more about AvePoint’s start-up mentality and culture. I also received a lot of positive feedback from people I knew who worked for the company previously.
I was drawn to the opportunity to work with enterprise clients and the challenge of working more complex sales cycles. I also wanted work for a company that built their own solutions that were created to scale for large enterprises. This would enable me to really focus on the needs of my customers and provide solutions that would meet their requirements.
What advice would you give to future new hires?
Ask a lot of questions and get to know the people that will be a part of your business process at AvePoint. Many of these people will not be within shouting distance of you, but they will be extremely important to your success. Take it upon yourself to reach out and set up time to understand what makes them successful in their roles and support them accordingly. If you support and understand others’ roles, you will be amazed at what you can accomplish here.
What do you like most about your job?
I enjoy that every day is different, and each day brings a new challenge from a prospective client or customer. I am lucky that the team I work with feels the same way, and we meet these challenges head on.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love sports. Depending on the time of the year, I could be on my couch watching a Bulls game, at Wrigley Field taking in a Cub’s game, or traveling to see my Redskins play. My wife and I are also big foodies, so living in Chicago give us access to some of the best food in the world.
What is your favorite quote?
“If you’re following your calling, the fatigue will be easier to bear, the disappointments will be fuel, the highs will be like nothing you’ve ever felt.” – Phil Knight (co-founder of Nike)
What does a typical day look like for you?
My day usually starts early. I begin by reviewing emails and sending follow ups to my customers on open tasks. I also spend time reviewing support cases for my customers to see if there is any escalation needed on my end. By mid-morning, I am syncing with my team (perhaps a solution engineer or customer success manager) to discuss next steps with our clients or prep for a presentation. Late morning and early afternoon are set aside for client meetings (either via Skype or on-site). Late afternoon is usually reserved for responses to any emails from the day I may have missed while in meetings, as well as conducting client research for the next day. I like synergy with my work week to ensure I have time to get everything done.
You’re happiest when…?
I’m hanging out on my back deck with my wife, enjoying a good beer and a good book. Reading is a great way for me to unplug and escape the day-to-day for a few hours.
