From Tahoe to Today: AvePoint & The SharePoint Ecosystem

I’m sure you’ve heard a lot of people talking about their support for workflow leader Nintex as of late, and for good reason – Nintex quickly made a name for itself helping organizations worldwide automate business processes and SharePoint workflow with ease. In fact, AvePoint and Nintex were both recognized by Forrester in a recent study as being top third-party software vendors utilized for SharePoint.

AvePoint has recognized Nintex’s strength since 2009, when we first started working with the vendor to develop a comprehensive SharePoint management solution that helped protect, manage, deploy, and migrate the mission-critical workflows supported by Nintex. Because a solution for migration doesn’t account for the entire SharePoint lifecycle management story, after all.

A quick history lesson: Back in 2009, AvePoint and Nintex came together due to joint customer concerns. Essentially, everyone utilizing SharePoint desired a backup and recovery story for the entire platform, especially one that took customized workflows and other applications into account.

AvePoint and Nintex’s field sales professionals, engineers, and developers worked closely to create a joint solution for SharePoint. The fruit of these efforts started back in 2009, when AvePoint brought to market the first fully compatible backup and recovery solution for Nintex workflows. We’ve also extended this support for custom SharePoint applications to the wider SharePoint ISV ecosystem – because we’ve learned from our more than 8,000 customers in 63 countries that there are myriad business needs the SharePoint platform addresses.

Our work together didn’t stop there, however, because that’s not where the SharePoint story ends. SharePoint’s strength is in enabling organizations to customize the platform to meet their specific business needs – oftentimes that means creating custom workflows and applications in test environments that, after verification, need to be moved into production. Instead of taking time and energy, and risking human error, to copy and paste code manually – or create custom codes using STSADM/Powershell functionality – we knew there had to be a better way. Organizations shouldn’t be punished for desiring tailored business solutions. AvePoint then released functionality via the DocAve Software Platform to automate the deployment of Nintex workflows from development and QA/test environments to production.

Now, as many organizations continue to adopt Microsoft® SharePoint® 2010 as the enterprise collaboration platform of choice, it is vital that the workflows, applications, and other customizations created on past releases of SharePoint can safely be transported to the new platform. As such, AvePoint fully supports migration of Nintex workflows to SharePoint 2010. Once those customized workflows and applications are migrated to SharePoint 2010, DocAve ensures that they can now also be fully protected and managed. We’ll be making crystal clear in forthcoming posts the depth to which our support for these workflows entails from a technical perspective.

The story of SharePoint doesn’t stop when the migration ends – it is an ongoing story that takes constant care. AvePoint’s recognized this from its beginning as the first Microsoft partners for SharePoint back in 2001, when its code name was Tahoe.

Through this collaboration, AvePoint’s mission has been to help extend a rich experience to support other members of the SharePoint ISV ecosystem, including but not limited to:
· Colligo
· Dell
· EMC
· IBM
· KnowledgeLake
· NetApp
· NewsGator

Businesses have dynamic needs – not just limited to one function, one vendor, or one solution. Organizations creating custom applications to tailor SharePoint to meet its specific needs shouldn’t have to fear they won’t be supported by the very community in which they are a member. It’s important to remember this as SharePoint continues to grow in popularity and adoption and, subsequently, the global community and ecosystem mirrors that growth.
