  • What happens to all my backup plans I have created in DocAve 4.5 when upgrading to DocAve 5?

    We will provide an upgrade tool for all configuration, plan, and backup/archive/audit data from 4.5 to 5 by the beginning / mid October.


  • Can DocAve 4.5 coexist with DocAve 5 in the same physical box?

    No, two different versions of DocAve cannot coexist in the same server


  • If we do not want to upgrade to DocAve 5, in the future can we still call into your Tech Support for questions concerning DocAve 4.5?

    Yes, if you are still under maintenance. Customers can still call in for help with DocAve 2.0!


  • Does DocAve 5 support remote installation over VPN connection?

    Yes, DocAve does support remote installations over a VPN connection


  • How does licensing work with DocAve 5? What are my maintenance options?

    DocAve licensing varies by modules. As an example: The data protection solution is licensed by server. The administration and compliance modules are licensed by front end web servers, and the migration module is licensed by gigabytes.
    Two maintenance packages are offered, Standard and Premier. Standard is 25% of licensing and includes Monday-Friday, 7am-7pm support, and free product upgrades. Premier is 33% of licensing cost, 24x7x365 support, free product upgrades, and light DocAve customizations.


  • What is Business Criticality Matrix and how does it work? How do I customize the matrix for my SharePoint environment?

    The Business Criticality Matrix allows administrators to define the importance level for each Site or Site Collection, while DocAve automatically tracks the usage activity for the content within that Site. Based on these two criteria, cells within the Matrix are populated with sites, and fully customizable backup plans are associated to each cell.
    The DocAve Automation Center allows you to view and modify the Criticality Matrix. In the Center, you can modify the plans associated with the cells in the matrix by dragging-and-dropping pre-created templates to designated matrix cells, as well as add new rows/columns to the matrix.


  • Can the traditional Backup and Recovery plans run alongside the new Business Criticality Matrix Plan?

    Yes, you can have content included only in the custom backup builder, the criticality matrix, or both for additional protection. You might want to have a traditional backup plan running along with the matrix, for instance, if a particular document library is of greater business importance than the site, and requires higher backup frequency.


  • With the criticality matrix, can certain sites be designated not to move around in the matrix? If you don’t want sites to automatically change backup plans can you have sites set at a certain business importance level, which will remain the same no matter what?

    You can lock sites’ business importance level (on the x-axis of the Matrix), but not the sites’ modification frequency (y-axis). The y-axis is dependent on how often sites are modified, so backup plans may change based on this depending on the configuration of the matrix. When creating business importance update rules, you can exclude sites from being ‘updated’ if you wish.


  • Will backups run within the Matrix if the importance level is set to zero?

    No. This precludes it from the matrix.


  • Does DocAve 5 require SharePoint service pack 1 to be installed?

    Yes, DocAve 5 requires that SharePoint Service pack 1 be installed for Extension Archiver (which utilizes BLOB API) and the STSADM interface.


  • What .NET Framework does DocAve 5 support?

    DocAve5 supports .Net 3.0 and above .NET Frameworks, as these are required with WSS 3.0 and MOSS. (.Net 2.0 .Net 2.0 are supported with SP1)


  • Does DocAve support SQL Server Express?

    Yes, all of the DocAve modules support SQL Server Express except for High Availability and Backup and Recovery’s Platform Level incremental backup.


  • Does DocAve support SQL server 2008?

    SQL 2008 support is currently pending further testing. We are working to support this as quickly as possible, so please feel free to test your DocAve v5 system and contact support with any issues you may have.


  • Can DocAve 5 Reporting Feature be scheduled?

    Yes, the reporting feature of DocAve Administrator can now be scheduled. You can run detailed reports on the farm, from the farm level down to the site level. This reporting feature now allows you to build unlimited amount of plans with 6 different schedules. The Report Center feature also has a difference-reporting option that tracks the changes that happen on your environment.


  • What is the difference between server compression/encryption and client compression/encryption?

    With client compression/encryption, the compression/encryption is performed by the server that the client is installed upon. After the data is compressed/encrypted by the client, the server decompresses/decrypts it. This should be used in an environment with heavy network traffic or one that is unsecure. This method will also use more of the client host resources.
    With the server compression/encryption, the data is compressed/encrypted by the media service. When the data is restored, the media service will decompress/decrypt the data. This method should be used if you wish to save space on you data storage location.
    Note: DocAve will not further compress any data that is already compressed.


  • Before paying extra for upgrading the Backup and Recovery tool in DocAve 5, do you offer free trial of this tool?
